Sanmon of Kurodani, Konkai-Komyoji Temple, Kyoto
The colossal two-story Sanmon gate at the entrance of the Kurodani, Konkai-Komyoji Temple was built in 1860 (late Edo-period). It is approximately 23 meters high, equivalent to an eight-story building.
The wooden plaque hung from the eaves of Sanmon gate carved with “First Gate of Jodo Shinshu.” is in the handwriting of Emperor Go-Komatsu.
On the second floor of the Sanmon gate, which is usually unseen, the Shaka Triad and the sixteen Arhats are enshrined, and the ceiling is painted with “coiling dragons.”
